Going Nuts On Healthy Eyes

Vitamin E has been shown to complement nutritional needs in good eye health maintenance. It is said to help prevent forming of cataract and even in preventing the age-related macular degeneration or AMD. Keeping the eyes healthy and disease free should be part of an individual’s overall health goal. Aside from the regular eye examination that an individual should undergo, whether child, adult, with prescription glasses or not, eating food rich in antioxidants will help in maintaining healthy eyes and preventing unnecessary eye problems. In addition to consuming enough of the vitamin E antioxidant, you can also incorporate simple eye exercises to keep your eyes working properly.

Vitamin E can be found in various food types such as green leafy vegetables, cereal and nuts. Pistachio nuts, for example contain nutrients called carotenoids which is good for eye health. Beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that help slow the progression of AMD. Almonds and hazelnuts are also good examples of nuts that contain about 24 milligrams of vitamin E per 100 gram serving. Just like any other types of food, make sure you eat nuts in moderation and only consume what is necessary to get the right amount of vitamin E supplements you need for healthy eyes.

Some studies have shown that consuming nuts in your daily diet (in moderation) provides 50% more carotenoids and thus is beneficial to vision care. Lutein, a carotenoid found in nuts, concentrate in the macula and they are thought to protect the retina and the lens from photodamage due to ultraviolet and short wavelength radiation because it filters the radiation before reaching the retina. Yet another controlled study of AMD-prone individuals showed that the risk of the disease was reduced by 43% for those who took 5.7 mg/day of carotenoids particularly lutein and zeaxanthin.
